Established in June 2024, Hiraad Institute stands as a beacon of knowledge production in the Somali region of Ethiopia. This non-partisan, non-profit think tank prioritizes rigorous research on critical issues facing the region. Policy and governance, peacebuilding, pastoralism and agriculture, climate change, economic development, religion and culture, history and heritage are all within Hiraad’s focus, ensuring a comprehensive approach to regional challenges. The institute will conduct research on policy making and stakeholder engagement, transparency and accountability of government institutions in the Somali region of Ethiopia. Institutionalizing this, Institute will also develop and promote policies and programs to strengthen the rule of law and to protect human rights.

  • Pastoralism and Agricultural Development

The Somali region boasts a rich tradition of pastoralism. The Institute delves into challenges faced by these communities, such as droughts, resource scarcity, and market access. We also explore opportunities for sustainable agricultural development, aiming to improve food security and livelihoods in the region.

  • Social Services

The quality of essential services directly impacts the well-being of Somali communities. The Institute assesses the accessibility and effectiveness of education, healthcare, water, and sanitation services. Annual Activities

  • Hiraad Annual Dialogue Forum (HADAF): A major annual event that brings together policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and community leaders from across the Somali region and beyond. The forum focuses on sharing research findings, discussing development challenges and opportunities, and fostering collaboration on solutions.
  • Periodic Forums and Panel Discussions: the institute will host regular forums on recent development of region. The forums will focus on discussing contemporary issues by bringing imminent and concerned professionals/officials on board to inform the public and contribute policy development.
  • Youth Innovation Challenge: An annual competition that encourages young people in the Somali region to develop innovative solutions for local development challenges. The challenge provides a platform for young talent, fosters entrepreneurial thinking, and identifies promising ideas that can be supported by the Institute.

Monthly Activities:
